To Control Your Men

Steal his trouser button
And with spider webs surround
Saying
“Now I have you captured,
And to me you are bound.”

I created this New Years Day, 2012. I’ve had this vintage postcard by G. Vicentini that I have long been waiting to create the perfect spell for. If you go about collecting spider webs for this spell be sure to be kind to the spiders and be careful not to get bit.

Open Your Eyes: A Spell to Dispel Illusion and Give Clear Sight

“Oh, she is such a fake. I wish more people could see through her beauty and charm and see the viper she really is.”

“I don’t know what she sees in him; he’s obviously taking advantage of her. If only she’d open her eyes and see.”

Sometimes don’t you just wish that they could see through the glamour? Cleverly and skillfully it has woven around the motives and actions of someone who is not what they present themselves to be. It could be a family member, so in love with someone who would use them selfishly… or it could be a co-worker who is always able to place the blame elsewhere for their own faults and yet come across smelling like roses. Perhaps it’s the lazy boyfriend who –despite being mean and condescending to his mate– is able to get her to do everything for him. Or maybe it’s the woman who lures you in with her caring and concern, only to betray your trust and hurt you so that she can get ahead herself. You know that these people are not worth your time, but those close to you are still involved. Whatever the specifics, what you need is a good “wake-me-up”. You want the truth to come to light!

This is an “Eye Opening” spell. It is designed to allow everyone to see beyond the ‘glamour’ or facade that a particular person employs around them, and deep into the truth of their nature. And when I say ‘everyone’ I mean ‘everyone’; even though you are convinced that this person is deceptive you will need to include yourself to have your eyes opened to their deep truth, as well. So there is the possibility that you might change your mind about this person after you perform this… or else perhaps have even more of a confirmation as to why you distrust them.

You should also be aware that if you are wrong about this person–and you do not include yourself in the spell– then the eyes that this spell opens may look upon you unfavorably; your friends and family perhaps seeing you as manipulative and meddling where it’s none of your business. For this reason it is important to include yourself in its eye-opening power.

Begin by performing whatever grounding and alignment exercises you generally do and then perform an Uncrossing. The house must then be cleansed and all glamours be dispelled. Any number of methods can accomplish this.

For this spell, gather the following:

  • A white candle
  • Some anointing or conjure oil (Uncrossing would be good, as would a ‘Road Opener‘ or ‘Van Van‘)
  • An incense charcoal and burner
  • A picture of the person whose glamour you wish to dispel (if you don’t have a photo, a name-paper with their signature, a sample of their handwriting, or their name written three times on it will suffice.)
  • Some dried eyebright leaf
After your Uncrossing and house cleansing, go to your altar and light the charcoal. When it is ready, sprinkle some eyebright on it and smoke yourself and the area, asking the spirit of eyebright to assist you in bringing clear sight in regards to this person.

Prepare a name paper on the back of the photograph. In the center draw a sigil that you have constructed to represent his (or her) name and essence. Around this, in cursive, write the phrase, “dispel all glamour and see him true”, in a circle around the sigil, only without any spaces between the words so that it is written in one continuous motion without lifting your pen. (This method is based on one taught in Cat Yronewode’s Lucky Mojo Hoodoo and Rootwork course and is my preferred method to begin making a name or petition paper.)

Draw an open eye in each of the four corners and add other symbols of power that you feel particularly drawn to. You can get creative and make it a work of art. Dab some of the oil on each of the corners and then finally in the very center of the paper. It is now it’s own crossroads. (You may even wish to align the four corners with the four directions when you dab with oil; sometimes I do this for added power. It really feel it is extra powerful when I dab that final center; the paper generally really comes alive for me at that point.)

Sprinkle a little bit more of the eyebright onto the charcoal and “smoke” the name paper/photograph. Repeat the phrase, “Dispel all glamour and see him true” for several moments (if not several minutes) as you feel power rising and flowing into the working. “See” a fog lift so that you, your family, your co-workers, your friends, and everybody else, can see this person for what they truly are. Place the name paper –photo side down– on the altar and surround it with a circle of the dried herb.
Carve an open eye near the top of the candle, one in the middle, and one near the bottom. Carve the names of everyone else being affected by this spell between the bottom and middle eyes, and your own name between the middle and top ones. Dress the candle with the oil while chanting the phrase, “Dispel all glamour and see him true”. Place the candle on top of the name paper and light it as you whisper the phrase three more times. Let the candle burn all the way down. Pay attention to how it burns and what remains (if any) are left as you can divine from them how the spell worked for you.

Gather up the circle of dried eyebright and steep a tea from it. A tiny bit will go secretly go into the food or drink, of those you wish to “wake-up”. Alternatively or additionally, you may wish to use this infusion to anoint their glasses, or glasses case, etc. Make sure to include yourself by touching a bit of the infusion to both of your eyelids as you ask for clear sight, and then sipping some. Whatever remains can be used to wash the front porch.

Depending on how it all goes, you might also want to have a couple other tricks at the ready, namely a “Cut & Clear” type spell, and maybe have a High John the Conqueror candle ready to lend strength and steadfastness.

And if you were wrong about the person? Well… maybe bring them a gift or muffin basket garnished with fresh lavender flowers for harmony, and then try your best to get along! 🙂

Second Sight for Enhanced Psychic Abilities

Oil_second_sight

Second Sight products from Modern Conjure set the mood for Psychic work. When I do readings at The Mystic Dream I first bless my third eye with Second Sight conjure oil. Works like a miracle. Soon we will be placing our other Second Sight products online, such as our Herb Blend and Incense, both of which I use to smoke the room before beginning my reading. Our products draw on the power of such herbs as Rue, Mugwort, Wormwood and others, all of which you should try.

Mechanized Magic

Mechanized Magic for Modern Conjure, spells and rituals that include mechanical and electronic elements.

The original image was weird on its own, reading:

This was the cover of a 1942 Pacific Gas & Electric publication titled “A Manual For The Care And Use Of Home Appliances.” I can help feeling that even with all the mechanical servants that provide her with domestic bliss she still longs for more magic in her life, so I made the appropriate changes and now she stands as hostess to Modern Conjure’s Mechanized Magic category.

Shining A Light On Your Success

Here is a simple technique of modern conjure sure to brighten your success. Next time a light bulb burns out replace it with one on which you have drawn a sigil for success with a permanent marker. I do this with a Sharpie, and on the bulb I draw a stylized symbol for the word success. I most often see folk using $$¢¢$$, as I often do myself, but it is not ideal for this trick as it may screw in sideways or upside down unless written on while the bulb is snug in its socket (which may not be practical for fixtures such as high ceiling lamps). Having the sigil topsy turvey won’t do for me, since it symbolically strikes me as misdirecting my success, and who knows, it could perchance make me wildly successful at disco dancing when the success I am working for is more gainful employment. So I adapted the sigil into a cross so that it remains relative and balanced whichever way it is turned

Many modern bulbs, such as LEDs and coiled fluorescents contained in bulbs, give off little heat, and I’ve not had a problems with those burning the ink. Even regular incandescent bulbs have worked fine for me, though this would not be appropriate for halogen bulbs. I even go an extra step and anoint the bulb with Crown of Success oil in a five spot pattern between the dollar signs and in the center (figure 2).

What appears as a circle and an X marking the center is the marriage of two cent signs. What I particularly like about this sigil is how it creates crossroads. That is where so much magic happens. As I see it, each dollar sign serves as a road towards successful opportunities.

So there you go, and after that it is just the flip of a switch to illuminate your life with success.

Law Keep Away, Vintage Style Charm

Hex Ephemera: Law Keep Away

We have yet to come out with a line of Law Keep Away products here at Modern Conjure, but this piece is currently inspiring us to do so. The verses are tongue-in-cheek, especially “An honest life you need not abide, if in a conjure bag these herbs you hide.” Although Law Keep Away is often used to conceal some shady business, it is also used without guilt among minorities who fear being profiled. When my lovers travel through certain parts of the country I feel safer knowing that along with some general curios for protection they also have a bit of Law Keep Away to protect them from officers who don’t take kindly to Queer Californiay Warlocks. Also, it’s a good thing to have if your spiritual practices involve activities that the law has come to frown on, such as going to beaches or graveyards at night. If you take advice from the spell above there are a couple additional rules to follow. First, be sure to ‘feed’ your conjure bag at least once a week. This can be done with a bit of cologne (I suggest Hoyt’s), applied to one or both sides of the bag in a five spot pattern which looks like the five dot pattern you see on dice. Secondly, keep you conjure bag hidden. Don’t let others see it or touch it. For purposes of law keep away it is best worn near your waist, so pinned to the band of your underwear works well.

How To Predict Specific Time Using Tarot

Phew! The reading turned out positive, with the querant relieved to know that she and her sister will eventually reconcile. Next, she asks the question that many tarot readers dread; “When?”

Many readers not only cringe at the question, but altogether avoid answering it. The general script among such readers reads similar to this, “Well, the tarot can only tell you what is likely to happen, however the future is not set in stone and we all have the ability to change our destiny, so we cannot truly say when something will happen or that it will happen for certain, only that it is very likely to happen based on the energies currently involved.”

While this view of destiny is common, and one that I myself subscribe to, in regards to divining time it is a classic cop out. For readings that reveal a negative outcome one wishes to let the querant know that a change in behavior may positively change the outcome. Unless the querant is on a quest for disappointment there would be little reason to consult the cards were there no hope of making things better. Still, having a certain time frame is helpful. While a reading may show that the outcome of a court case may be unfavorable should the querant not let go of the greed seen in the four of pentacles, they may still need to know how long the case is likely to drag on. It may be that seeing how long it will take encourages them to settle, which may ultimately be an improvement.

For readings favoring a positive future outcome, you do not wish to erase their enthusiasm by proclaiming that the future is fickle and may not be as positive as the cards just suggested. While you do not want to make false promises, a positive reading should not be followed by a disillusioning statement about how good things may not happen after all. This is why it is important to give them something to look forward to, and to develop your own way of determining dates through tarot.

Of course you needn’t stick with tarot to determine dates. Other modes of divination may work better for you, such as scrying or using a pendulum, however if you wish to stick with the cards then there are many ways of determining time with them. Some readers associate the various suits with seasons. Some similarly link a particular suit with days, weeks, months or years. Having worked with a variety of modalities I wish to share the one that works the best for me… counting cards until I come to an upright Ace.

It’s rather simple… Following the initial reading gather up all the cards and reshuffle them. If you do not generally read reversals and like your deck to remain oriented in a single direction then you may wish to have a deck dedicated to this task of determining time. If you choose to have a dedicated deck you could paint the edges of the card with colored nail polish so that you do not accidentally pass them by and swiftly lay them down. I always flip the deck so that all cards are facing up, then lay them down on the table. If you count through the entire deck with all the aces reversed be sure to reshuffle before going through them again. Whereas the reader I initially learned this technique from would count until reaching the first ace, I count until reaching the first upright ace, which allows the cards to count indefinitely.

The main drawback to this method is that it can be time consuming if you don’t have adroit fingers for laying down cards. If I have not found an ace after going through the deck five times then I stop, letting them know that it is unlikely to happen this year, at least not as things are currently stand. When this is the case I usually lay out a few more cards to inquire if magical work might expedite the outcome.

Let’s say, however, that an upright ace did come up. The number of cards you counted to get to it are the number of days until the stage is set for them to receive the desired outcome. As I discussed earlier, when it comes to tarot absolutes are few. The date revealed tells us the most likely, opportune time for something to happen, the time when the energy surrounding the querant is best to bring about the desired outcome. Returning to the example given at the beginning of this, it could be that on this day the querant’s sister is likely to be in a particularly good mood, perhaps missing sister. She may even be contemplating making the phone call that will reconcile them. It never hurts to give a little push. That is when we examine our ace.

This is the aspect of this tarot style where conjure comes into play. The ace that indicates the date also indicates the energy that will help to bring things to fruition. To help with this I suggest that the querant light a candle on that morning to focus on what they hope will come to pass. The color of the candle is determined by the ace.

Ace of Pentacles = Green or Brown
Ace of Cups = Blue
Ace of Wands = Red or Orange
Ace of Swords = Yellow

Additionally, these suits may give you clues concerning issues that may help you…

Ace of Pentacles: Perhaps the querant’s sister is calling not for the purpose of reconciliation, but to discuss splitting the bill for Mom’s care.

Ace of Cups: There may be a lot of emotional issues that will need to be sorted out.

Ace of Wands: There may be some heated issues to discuss, the querant may need to be aware of her anger and need to express it without letting the anger overwhelm her.

Ace of Swords: She may need to give a lot of consideration to the situation before she is ready to make things better, best to have a plan, moreover a plan B.

In summary, this method works well to determine a specific date for when an event predicted by a tarot reading will happen, plus it offers suggestions regarding what issues will come into play at that time and prescribes a magical solution in form of lighting a colored candle.
